Eden Hazard: Chelsea fans fear the worst as Maurizio Sarri names star player on the bench against Eintracht Frankfurt

Maurizio Sarri has made a bold move by naming Eden Hazard on the bench for the first leg of Chelsea’s Europa League semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Blues manager clearly has one eye on Sunday’s Premier League clash with Watford, prioritising a top-four finish over Europa League glory.

Chelsea are in control of fourth place, with a two-point cushion over Arsenal and just a couple of games remaining.

However, the winners of the Europa League will also book their place in next season’s Champions League – and fans are stunned to see Hazard rested.

The Belgian has been used sparingly in the earlier stages of the competition, but the Blues are now within touching distance of silverware.

Chelsea’s opponents are not to be underestimated – Eintracht currently sit fourth in the Bundesliga and eliminated Portuguese giants Benfica en route to the semis.

Instead, Willian and Pedro start on the wings with Olivier Giroud up front rather than Gonzalo Higuain.

The last time Sarri decided he could cope without Hazard was at Cardiff.

Europa League: Maurizio Sarri says Chelsea can't afford to err like in Malmo game against top Premier League sides Friday, 15 February 2019 Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said they cannot afford to concede goals against top Premier League sides like they did in their Europa League win at Malmo.

A table of the most positively talked about clubs on Twitter

As shown by the data, Bournemouth, Huddersfield and Brighton are the biggest winners out of all the Premier League clubs.

The Cherries are a reasonably likeable club with a likeable manager in Eddie Howe, so there is no surprise that 54 per cent of tweets are positive about the south coast side.

The same can be said with Brighton and Huddersfield, who both have a change score of 13, as most sides often pick up six points a season from the relegation battlers.

Meanwhile, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Leicester City have the biggest drop in popularity.

The league leaders are top of the table but are 14th in the popularity rankings on Twitter, with just 36 per cent of tweets positive about Pep Guardiola’s men.

Their title rivals Liverpool have also proved to be an unpopular bunch, sitting 16th in the overall standings with positive tweets about the club sitting at 36 per cent.

Fulham sit bottom of the pile with 27 per cent of tweets positive about the club. The Cottagers, who have been relegated from the Premier League, therefore have the least change in the data provided.

Manchester City should mimic Sir Alex Ferguson and give Vincent Kompany a new contract, says talkSPORT pundit

Manchester City must take a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson̢۪s book and keep Vincent Kompany at the club for at least another year.

That’s according to talkSPORT pundit Micky Gray, who says the former Manchester United boss was ‘the best’ at keeping experienced winners and leaders at Old Trafford as a boost to his younger players.

Vincent Kompany celebrates his stunning goal for Man City against Leicester

City have been urged to hand club captain Kompany a new contract after his goal of a lifetime against Leicester City all-but handed the Premier League title to the Blues.

The Belgian defender smashed in the only goal of a 1-0 victory from 30 yards on Monday night, as City climbed back above Liverpool by one point ahead of this weekend̢۪s season finale.

If City win their final game of the campaign against Brighton, they will be crowned champions again.

It will be a fourth Premier League title win for 33-year-old Kompany, who is out of contract in the summer.

Pep Guardiola has admitted he will sit down with the centre-back to discuss his future after the season finishes.

And Gray insists he must be given a new deal to stay at the Etihad Stadium, dubbing him one of Manchester City’s own ‘Holy Trinity’.

â€Å“If they were going to do a statue of three players, like Manchester United have done at Old Trafford, you would have Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Vincent Kompany,” the former Sunderland defender told talkSPORT host Jim White on Tuesday.

â€Å“In this era, over the last ten years, they are the three best players who have played for Manchester City.

Manchester City: Vincent Kompany

3

Vincent Kompany has captained Man City to three Premier League titles – can he make it four this season?

â€Å“When you think of what Man City have achieved with Vincent Kompany as captain, and he’s just irreplaceable, not just on the field but off it as well.

â€Å“Gary Neville made so much sense when he said Man City should keep Kompany and they should sign him on for another three years.

â€Å“What that means is, when you’re bringing new players into that dressing room and they’re settling into a new club, they can look at somebody who has been there and won what he’s won at that club.

Kompany is eager to continue playing at the highest level for City

3

Kompany is eager to continue playing at the highest level for City

â€Å“Sir Alex Ferguson was the best at it for years and years– he kept players at United for maybe a year or two years too long because of the success they had at that club.

â€Å“You keep winners and leaders in that dressing room and it has a knock-on effect to the players you bring in.

â€Å“So, even if Kompany only plays ten to 15 games, the importance of having him there is second to none.”

Juventus 1-2 Ajax (2-3 on aggregate): Eredivisie giants stun Cristiano Ronaldo and Co to progress to Champions League semi-finals

Ajax stunned Juventus to reach the Champions League semi-finals with a 2-1 comeback win in Turin.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave Juventus the lead after 28 minutes with a record 126th goal in the competition, his ninth in just seven meetings with Ajax.

But goals from Donny Van De Beek and Matthijs De Ligt gave Ajax a thoroughly deserved 3-2 aggregate success.

Ajax will meet Manchester City or Tottenham in their first Champions League semi-final for 22 years and many will consider them underdogs again.

But after eliminating Real Madrid, champions for the previous three seasons, and now Juventus, Erik Ten Hag’s exciting young side should not be underestimated.

In what was to prove a hugely entertaining contest, both sides were slow to start.

Emre Can almost embarrassed Andre Onana when he charged down the Ajax goalkeeper’s kick and the ball flew wide of a gaping goal.

Ajax lost injured full-back Noussair Mazraoui inside the opening 10 minutes but the visitors almost struck the first blow.

David Neres found space in a crowded penalty area and his deflected shot squirmed through to Van De Beek, who fired over the crossbar at full stretch.

Paulo Dybala saw his volley held by Onana in Juventus’ first meaningful attack, but the hosts were soon ahead through a familiar source.

The unmarked Ronaldo met Miralem Pjanic’s corner with a trademark thunderous header as Ajax complained of a foul on Joel Veltman.

Clement Turpin went to the sidelines for a VAR check, but the French referee’s closer inspection showed that Veltman’s team-mate De Ligt had actually pushed him to the ground.

But Ajax were level within six minutes when Hakim Ziyech’s shot fell into Van De Beek’s path and the midfielder made the most of his good fortune with an assured finish into the bottom corner.

The second half was on a knife edge and Ajax were determined to send men forward in search of a goal that would leave Juventus needing two and a mountain to climb.

De Ligt is just 19 years old

Juventus heaved a huge sigh of relief when Neres broke through and Van De Beek set up Ziyech inside the penalty area.

Wojciech Szczesny thrust out a strong left arm just as the ball appeared to be going past him and Juventus survived.

Van De Beek was on the end of further breathtaking Ajax approach play, but again Szczesny was equal to the task and tipped the ball over the crossbar.

Juventus substitute Moise Kean fired wide after being slipped through by Ronaldo, but Ajax continued to call the tune and Pjanic stuck out a foot to deny Ziyech the simplest of tap-ins.

The pressure finally told after 67 minutes as De Ligt towered above Alex Sandro and Daniele Rugani to head Lasse Schone’s corner past a helpless Szczesny.

Ajax should have scored more in the closing stages as Neres scuffed Dusan Tadic’s pass wide and Ziyech saw his pile-driver disallowed for offside.

But Juventus produced few late scares, even if an unsuccessful penalty appeal went to VAR again, as Ajax became the first Dutch side to reach the last four of the Champions League since 2005.

Following their 1-1 draw with Huddersfield at the start of May, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted some Manchester United players could have played their final game for the club.

That was before they lost 2-0 to relegated Cardiff on the final day of the season.

The Old Trafford boss is set to oversee a clear-out this summer, having seen his side finish sixth and fail to secure Champions League football.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to axe certain Manchester United players this summer

“I can’t talk about individuals now but there’s a chance you’ve seen the last of [some] players,” he said on 5 May.

Speaking after the Cardiff defeat, he said: “This league is a tough one, no matter who you play, and it’s a long season and towards the end we’ve performed under par.

“The big plus is the season’s over so we put a big line over it and look forward. We know we are too far behind where we want to be, that’s the 98 and 97 points – that’s exceptional from the two teams (City and Liverpool).”

Here, talkSPORT look at the Manchester United players who could move on before the start of next season.

1. Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez has struggled for form since swapping Arsenal for Manchester United last year

Sanchez has failed to replicate his Arsenal at Manchester United. On a reported £500,000-a-week, the Chilean has scored just five goals since moving to Manchester in January 2018 and reports claim United want to get rid of the 30-year-old so badly they are willing to pay half of his salary if he finds a new club. He started for the first time in two months against Huddersfield, but went off injured in the 54th minute, which seemed to sum up his Manchester United career.

After the loss to Cardiff, he used Instagram to say: “It was a very tough season…the fans are the ones who deserve an apology as they always support you no matter what happens. Personally, I didn’t perform as much as I was expecting because of unpredictable injuries,” adding he has always remained professional and is certain United will return to the winning ways of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

2. Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba’s attitude has been questioned by fans and pundits this season

8

Paul Pogba’s attitude has been questioned by fans and pundits this season

Pogba has been linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid for most of the season. After initially rediscovering his form under Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho in December, the Frenchman has not scored from open play since February. And since Zinedine Zidane’s reappointment as Real Madrid boss in March, Pogba is understood to be one of the Spanish club’s top targets this summer. A verbal altercation with some United supporters at full-time on the final day of the season may have made his mind up to get out.

3. Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku recently admitted it would be ‘a dream’ to play in Serie A amid speculation surrounding his future. He has been in and out of Manchester United’s starting XI this season, with Solskjaer opting to play Marcus Rashford through the middle at times. It would not be a surprise if he moved on at the end of the season.

4. Ander Herrera

The midfielder confirmed he is leaving the club and Paris Saint-Germain are believed to won the race to sign Herrera. Having failed to agree a new contract, the 29-year-old will leave the club with a Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup in his trophy cabinet.

Mata’s contract expires on June 30 and will be available for free. There are no signs that suggest he is close to extending his stay at Old Trafford, though it has been reported United have offered him a one-year extension. Solskjaer remains hopeful the 31-year-old will stay.

“He’s a fantastic person and a fantastic player,” the manager said. “It’s up to him. I’ve had words with him and he knows how highly I regard him,” adding he will wait to see what happens.

The right-back has made just seven appearances this season and is set to leave for free at the end of the 2018/19 campaign. Darmian harbours hopes of returning to the Italy national team and will need to play regular first-team football to do so, which is something United cannot offer him. He is behind Ashley Young and youngster Diogo Dalot in the Old Trafford pecking order.

Antonio Valencia’s ten-year stay at Manchester United appears to be coming to an end

Valencia has played just once under Solskjaer due to injury and form. The 33-year-old has been a great servant to the club since signing from Wigan in 2009, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League, with the game against Cardiff being his final game in a United shirt.
