Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle United: Gunners leapfrog Tottenham and Manchester United with victory over Magpies at Emirates

Aaron Ramsey helped Arsenal up to third in the Premier League by opening the scoring against Newcastle in their 2-0 win on Monday.

Alexandre Lacazette was also on the scoresheet at the Emirates as they moved above north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the table.

Unai Emery’s side had not played for 18 days with the manager making a number of changes to the starting line-up, including dropping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the bench.

Arsenal thought they had taken an early lead when Aaron Ramsey converted a corner at the far post, but it was ruled out for a foul.

Referee Anthony Taylor ruled Sokratis Papastathopoulos to have pulled Florian Lejeune’s shirt.

Ramsey did not have too much longer to wait to get on the scoresheet as he hit the back of the net again after half an hour – and this one stood.

After his flick set Alexandre Lacazette clear, he surged into the box and stroked the loose ball into the bottom corner.

Only a brilliant goal-line clearance from Matt Ritchie denied Arsenal a second on the stroke of half-time.

The winger was a brilliant last line of defence to block Lacazette’s fierce volley as it stayed 1-0.

The Gunners were dealt an injury blow in the second half as goalscorer Ramsey was forced off.

The Wales international was replaced by Mohamed Elneny as he went straight down the tunnel.

Ki Sung-Yueng had a good opportunity for Newcastle ten minutes from time but his shot from the edge of the area was just wide of the top corner.

Unai Emery’s side killed the game with six minutes to go as Lacazette produced a sublime finish to put them 2-0 up.

The striker latched on to substitute Aubameyang’s flick to chip the ball over stranded goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Manchester United a big danger: Arsenal manager Unai Emery

Manchester United a big danger: Arsenal manager Unai Emery

LONDON • Arsenal manager Unai Emery has praised the work of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his short time at Manchester United, admitting the Red Devils are now a "very dangerous" opponent for any team.
Since taking over from Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer has overseen seven successive wins in all competitions, and his attacking approach has won over a dressing room that grew tired of his sacked predecessor's spiky personality and dour tactics.
The Gunners will host United in the fourth round of the FA Cup today and Emery is expecting "a very big test" after being impressed by their turnaround.
He told reporters: "It's a different team. It's the same players but they're playing with a big performance now. I watched their last matches and each player has a lot of confidence."
His preparations included a team-building paintball trip earlier in the week, but it has been a difficult few days for the club, both on and off the pitch.
It was announced on Monday that head of recruitment Sven Mislintat will leave next month, having been in the job for only a year.
A day later, defender Hector Bellerin learnt he could miss up to nine months after suffering ruptured knee ligaments in the 2-0 win over Chelsea last Saturday.
Emery revealed the team were sad that a third Gunner had been ruled out for the season before claiming that non-playing appointments were "not my issue".
He added: "This year is very difficult for big injuries like Hector, Rob Holding and (Danny) Welbeck. But football is like that.

BIG TRANSFORMATION
It's a different team. It's the same players but they're playing with a big performance now. I watched their last matches and each player has a lot of confidence.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, on how Manchester United have changed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

BIG CLASH
That's the one fierce rivalry of my years. They won the double, we won the treble. The games were just fantastic.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United interim manager, reminiscing about the tough Arsenal games he experienced as a player.

"We need to treat these injuries like a normality in football, but we are very sad."
Asked if it was important to find a swift replacement for Mislintat, he said: "Maybe if you do this recruitment very quickly, you can make a mistake. It's better to do without that, being calm and also finding the best possible person to do this job like we want."
However, he gave a glowing endorsement of Monchi, the Roma director of football who has been linked to the vacant post.
The pair worked together at Spanish club Sevilla and Emery hinted he was eager to renew the "good relationship" with his fellow Spaniard who was "a good person and a good professional".
But he knows better than to let these matters distract him against a man eager to get one over United's "closest rivals" in his playing days.
Solskjaer, reminiscing about the period when Arsenal were United's main competitors from 1997-2005, said: "That's the one fierce rivalry of my years. They won the double, we won the treble. The games were just fantastic."
Although United will rotate their side for the Cup game, the players that are standing in still "have the quality to play". He added: "We have a very good and talented squad. There will be one or two changes definitely."
One player who is eager to play is Alexis Sanchez, who is returning to London for the first time since his bitter exit last January. The Chile forward is expected to get a frosty reception but Solskjaer is unperturbed by the likely boos.
Said the Norwegian: "I think he'll love it if the crowd turn against him. As a player, pride kicks in and you think, 'I'll show all of you.'
"He's been fantastic in training, his attitude has been spot on so, hopefully, he'll enjoy the game."

N’Golo Kante: Chelsea star ‘a major doubt’ for Europa League final against Arsenal

N’Golo Kante is a major doubt for the Europa League final with Arsenal after the Chelsea midfielder suffered an injury setback during training on Saturday.

The World Cup winner had almost fully recovered from the hamstring injury which saw him limp off in the penultimate game of the season against Watford.

However, the France international is reported to have sustained a knock to his knee and looks set to be sidelined which is a massive blow to Chelsea who hope to win the competition for a second time, when they contest the all-English showdown in Baku on Wednesday.

Chelsea are already without Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek who both suffered ruptured Achilles tendon injuries, while defender Antonio Rudiger is out after knee surgery.

Prior to the news, Maurizio Sarri had been optimistic of having Kante back at his disposal.

“Of course we are trying to recover Kante. He had a part of the training yesterday with the group, so we are optimistic,” he said.

“I think he will be able to play the final. Rudiger no chance. No, Rudiger and Loftus-Cheek and Callum are all out. The only one we can recover is Kante.”

It means Chelsea are likely to have a midfield of Ross Barkley, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho to face Arsenal.

The 28-year-old was a major injury doubt for the Blues ahead of the Europa League final against Arsenal last night (Wednesday), but played through the pain barrier in order to help his team lift the trophy after a 4-1 win against their London rivals.

Maurizio Sarri has stormed out of Chelsea’s training session just 24 hours before their Europa League final match against Arsenal.

The Blues face their London rivals at Baku’s Olympic Stadium on Wednesday evening and were taking part in one of their final training sessions ahead of the match.

But the Italian coach left the session in a furious rage after Gonzalo Higuain and David Luiz appeared to be involved in an altercation.

The Brazilian defender appeared to go in late on the striker, with the Argentine then seemingly uttering some harsh words to his team-mate.

Cesar Azpilicueta then tried to play peacemaker but it was seemingly too late as Sarri stormed off down the tunnel, kicking his hat as he went.

Meanwhile, the Blues boss earlier confirmed that N’Golo Kante is 50/50 to be involved in the showpiece match.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Sarri said: “He had a little problem in his knee. It’s not a serious injury but the problem is the timing because we have only four days to recover. We are trying.”

Kante had been on course to make a full recovery from a hamstring injury which kept him out of the semi-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt and the Blues’ final match of the Premier League season against Leicester.

The setback means Sarri will likely have to field a midfield trio of Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and Ross Barkley in the final.

Roy Keane vs Mick McCarthy: Clinton Morrison’s brilliant recollection of famous Republic of Ireland bust-up in Saipan

Roy Keane vs Mick McCarthy: Clinton Morrison’s brilliant recollection of famous Republic of Ireland bust-up in Saipan

“Roy was steaming – all I was thinking was, please don’t come for me!”

Listen back to Clinton Morrison’s brilliant recollection of the infamous ‘Saipan incident’ which rocked Irish football in the build-up to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

It’s almost 17 years ago that Roy Keane was sensationally sent home from Republic of Ireland’s World Cup squad before a ball had even been kicked, after launching a foul-mouthed tirade at manager Mick McCarthy at their training base on the Pacific island of Saipan.

Keane’s row with McCarthy in Saipan caused a major storm back home in Ireland

Keane’s row with McCarthy in Saipan caused a major storm back home in Ireland

The Manchester United legend was unhappy with the preparations of the team ahead of their huge opportunity to shine on the global stage, and challenged his boss in front of the entire team and staff.

Former striker Morrison had a front-row seat as the row unfolded, and he told talkSPORT of how he was sent ducking for cover when it all kicked off.

“Roy wants things done professionally,” the London-born star – who won 36 caps for Republic of Ireland, scoring nine goals – told talkSPORT.

“He was at Manchester United and he said when it comes to the World Cup, he wanted things done properly.

“But the first day we got to Saipan was a nightmare. Our kit went missing and the training facilities were not the best.

“If Roy waited a day, we went to a place called Chiba [near Tokyo, Japan] and it had the best facilities, the pitch was like a carpet. But he’d lost his head the day before, he’d gone mad.”

But that was not the extent of Keano’s gripes. Reports at the time claimed the midfielder was not only unhappy with the facilities, but also their travel arrangements to Saipan, McCarthy’s tactics and even the team’s diet.

It all proved too much for the hot-headed star, who reneged against McCarthy’s strict media ban to lift the lid to the Irish press and things spiralled from there…

Morrison continued: “Mick said to us, ‘no one is allowed to do any interviews’.

“I used to get on with Roy. I used to like getting in his brain and I still speak to him now, I think he’s a wonderful guy. He told me: ‘Make sure you’re here not to make up the numbers, Clinton. You’re here to play.’

“We spoke for an hour and then we went for dinner and we always had a sing-song, so I’m there signing my Irish songs, as I do, and Mick comes in with a paper.

“Roy had obviously had a moan [to the press] about the facilities, and Mick said: ‘I told you not to do any interviews, so why have you done this?’

“Roy said: ‘I did an interview because I wanted to. The set-up, the surroundings, they have not been good enough’.

“They started arguing. I’m thinking, hang on a minute, our best player, the best player Ireland have probably produced for many, many years is there arguing with the manager and the whole squad is watching it.

“He said to Mick: ‘You were a bad player anyway, you had a rubbish first touch and you’re a poor manager. The only manager I respect is Sir Alex Ferguson‘.

But it was’t all rosy at Old Trafford, as Keane soon fell out with Ferguson too…

4

But it was’t all rosy at Old Trafford, as Keane soon fell out with Ferguson too…

“Then he said: ‘And you’re English, you’re not even Irish!’

“As soon as he said that, I think most people who were born in England put their head under the table. I know I did. I was thinking, please don’t come for me!

“I don’t know if it would have come to blows, but Roy was steaming!

“I think Mick could have done it in a different way, spoke to him one-on-one, because Roy was always ready to blow back then, always fighting things and always ready to go into one.

“They got separated and Roy stood there and said: ‘Go on, Mick. What are you going to do? Make a decision.’

“So he had to send him home and, literally within two days, he was back in Manchester wearing that horrendous Diadora tracksuit he used to wear walking his dog.

“I couldn’t believe it!”

Despite losing one of their key players, Ireland made it out of the group stages – finishing runners up to Germany – but went no further than the last-16, where they were beaten by Spain on penalties.

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri said Chelsea have no chance of competing with Manchester City and Liverpool next season unless their two-window transfer ban is overturned.
Chelsea were hit with the ban for breaches of the international transfer rules on minors and Fifa threw out their appeal against the decision on Wednesday.
The Blues will take their fight against the transfer embargo to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but it was the worst possible news for Sarri ahead of Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Having booked a place in next season's Champions League after securing a top four finish in the Premier League, Chelsea are bidding to win the first trophy of Sarri's reign in the Europa League.
They are favoured to reach the final after drawing 1-1 in Frankfurt in the first leg last week.
But Sarri is concerned that a potentially uplifting end to hs troubled first season would be erased if Chelsea are unable to sign the players he believes are needed to fight City and Liverpool in the Premier League.
"It's very difficult to cover the gap at the moment; we need to work, probably we need to do something from the market," said Sarri, whose third-placed team are 24 points behind leaders City.

"So it's not easy, because the level of the top two is very, very high. As we can see in Europe so it's not easy.
"Of course, we have to work and we have to try. In my opinion we can reduce the gap.
"I think that we have to buy only one, two players, otherwise it's very difficult to improve immediately.
"I think we are a very good team, so we need only one, two players, no more."

Young talent

Fifa confirmed it has "partially upheld" Chelsea's appeal, but only in allowing the club to sign European players aged under 16.
The ban on signing over-16s remains in place, leaving Chelsea unable to make changes to Sarri's squad unless they win the CAS appeal.
With Real Madrid expected to make a move for Blues star Eden Hazard, who is out of contract next year, Sarri could be forced to sell a player he would prefer to keep rather than risk losing him for nothing when his deal expires.
That would further weaken his options, but the Italian remains intent on staying with Chelsea next term.
The former Napoli manager insists he would be able to survive without new signings at Chelsea next term, despite the obvious impact on his team's development.
Asked if he would be ready to promote youth talents to the senior squad next term, Sarri said: "I like to play with young players, so for me it's not a big problem.
"At the moment, we spoke one month ago about the pre-season, the programme of the next season.
"But we didn't speak about the market, also because at the moment we don't know if we'll be able to go into the market.
"Every month I have a report, about the players on loan, we have 45 or 46 players on loan. Of course, we need to consider who is ready.
"Two or three of those players are very interesting of course. But we need to consider the level."

MLS: 15 former Premier League players starring in America, including ex-Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United aces

MLS: 15 former Premier League players starring in America, including ex-Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United aces

Major League Soccer is quickly becoming a great incubator for talent with Miguel Almiron the latest star to venture to Europe after making his name in America.

There is though still a market for European-based talents travelling across the Atlantic to reignite their careers.

Gedion Zelalem in action for Arsenal’s Under-23s this season upon his return from injury.

Former Arsenal starlet Gedion Zelalem is now looking to impress in the States and get himself back on track having signed for Sporting Kansas City.

After an unfortunate injury derailed his time with the Gunners will first spend time with Swope Park Rangers.

If he can impress he could join a host of other former Premier League players now plying their trade in MLS.

But who are the men currently starring in America having left our shores? Find out below.

Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids)

The former Everton and Manchester United goalkeeper is now in the final season of his career as he prepares to retire at the end of the 2019 MLS campaign.

He’s performed well for the Rapids and in 2016 saved two penalties to guide his side into to the Western Conference Championship.

Howard will soon retire.

Danny Wilson (Colorado Rapids)

Signed by Liverpool from Rangers for £2million in 2010, Wilson only made two Premier League appearances for the Reds.

The defender failed to make an impact out on loan in England but was signed on a free by Heart of Midlothian and then returned to Rangers.

He then joined the Rapids in January 2018 and played 23 times, while he has made another two this campaign.

Kei Kamara (Colorado Rapids)

A Premier League spell with Norwich City saw Kamara net just one goal in 11 appearances.

Stateside, though, the Sierra Leone ace has a formidable record. He’s now had prolific spells with Columbus Crew (31 goals in 46 appearances), New England Revolution (21 in 59), Vancouver Whitecaps (17 in 31), and is now with the Rapids and has already opened his account for the current campaign.

Reto Ziegler (FC Dallas)

Tottenham and Wigan had the Swiss ace on their books in the Premier League but the left-sided player never fulfilled his potential, either at left-back or as a left winger.

Now 33, he’s found a role in MLS as a centre-back and is even converting penalties for his current club.

Maynor Figueroa (Houston Dynamo)

Fondly remembered for his lengthy spell at Wigan, the Honduran ace once scored from the halfway line in the Premier League against Stoke City, while he was in the Latics’ FA Cup winning side in 2013.

Following spells at Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas, he’s now a Dynamo.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (LA Galaxy)

Who could forget the bombastic Swede! After conquering almost every European country, he’s now starring in the States.

The former Manchester United man scored 22 MLS goals in his 27 appearances during his debut campaign, he’s one for one now but is recovering from an injury.

Carlos Vela (Los Angeles FC)

During his early career at Arsenal, the Mexican was known for his love of chipping the goalkeeper when through one-on-one.

Now 30, the ex-Gunner is in fine form in his second season with LAFC, scoring three and assisting two in his first four matches. This comes after a debut campaign with 14 goal and 10 assists – not bad at all!

Vela played for Mexico at the World Cup last summer.

Nedum Onuoha (Real Salt Lake)

Once a mainstay in the England Under-21, the former Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers defender is now a regular at centre-back this season over in MLS.

Roger Espinoza (Sporting Kansas City)

Prior to his three-campaign spell at Wigan, where the left wing-back won the FA Cup, Espinoza was in Kansas.

It turned out there was no place like home so he returned there in 2015 and has forged a fine career as a central midfielder.

Bastian Schweinsteiger (Chicago Fire)

The Germany legend has already done more in his time in America than he did at Old Trafford, which is shame given his standing in the game.

A regular for the Fire and sometimes captain, he even turned out a centre-back on a couple of occasions for the club last term.

Wayne Rooney (DC United)

The England and Manchester United legend appears to be continuing his thrilling start to MLS life having netted three goals in three games this season, while also grabbing an assist.

Rooney is now captain and striker in Washington having played in midfield last year – he still managed 12 goals in 20 games though, plus six assists.

Bacary Sagna (Montreal Impact)

It looked like the French right-back’s career was all but over when he left Benevento after a short stay. Now, though, he’s doing well in Canada at 36-years-old.

Michael Mancienne (New England Revolution)

One of the most capped players in England Under-21 history, the ex-Chelsea academy man never made it as a Premier League player.

He had spells with Queens Park Rangers, Wolves, Hamburg, and Nottingham Forest but is now captain of the Revolution, and playing at centre-back.

Bradley Wright-Phillips (New York Red Bulls)

A bonafide MLS legend. Wright-Phillips didn’t make the grade in the Premier League with Manchester City but after spells with Southampton, Plymouth and Charlton he opted for a switch to America.

It turned out to be one of the best football decisions ever. The forward has 125 goals in 216 games for New York Red Bulls – a fine career.

Nani (Orlando City)

It was always going to be hard for the winger to live up to comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo.

He made a fist of it at Old Trafford before spells at Fenerbahce, Valencia, Lazio, and Sporting Lisbon – but can he crack America?
