Women's game could use VAR

Women's game could use VAR
ZURICH ̢ۢ Fifa's organising committee announced on Monday that it would recommend the use of video assistant referee (VAR) technology at the Women's World Cup this summer for the first time.
The decision, which is expected to be approved by the governing Fifa Council when it meets later this month in Miami, is a victory for women footballers, coaches and fans who have highlighted gender equality issues in the international game.
VAR allows the on-pitch referee to consult a colleague viewing video replays to help confirm, or overturn, close calls in a narrow set of instances.
It was fully implemented for the first time at last June's World Cup in Russia, where Fifa hailed its introduction as a rousing success.
But, as the Women's World Cup came into view, Fifa repeatedly declined to confirm whether VAR would be used in that competition, turning the issue into another flashpoint - alongside artificial turf pitches, unequal compensation and bonuses - in the broader gender equity debate in the sport.
On the VAR point, at least, the debate seems finally to be settled. Fifa president Gianni Infantino said last weekend that he supported the use of the technology at the women's event in June, stating it was proving effective at discouraging the type of diving and playacting that often plague tournaments.
"Players now know that it's not just sufficient to have a look where is the referee, so if he doesn't see me, I can simulate, because he or she will be caught," he said. "That's why VAR helps the fight against simulation and diving in a very efficient way."
Zvonimir Boban, the deputy secretary-general of Fifa, also said in a statement: "Based on the thorough work carried out over the past few months, Fifa is happy with the steps taken and the excellent job done by Fifa's refereeing team and the female referees involved.
"We are confident about proposing the use of VAR in France to the Fifa Council, as we are very positive about its implementation."
United States defender and 2015 Women's World Cup winner Becky Sauerbrunn felt the impending implementation was just a matter of common sense.
"For me, it's why not?" she said. "Why not give it to the women if you give it to the men?"

The Masters 2019: Tiger Woods battles back into contention despite bad weather and security guard collision

A badly-timed weather delay and even a bizarre sliding tackle from a security guard failed to prevent Tiger Woods from surging into contention for a 15th major title on a sensational second day of the 83rd Masters.

Woods had just recorded the first birdie of the day on the daunting 11th hole and fired a superb tee shot to five feet on the 12th when the siren sounded to suspend play due to the threat of lightning at Augusta National.

After a delay of around 30 minutes play was able to resume and Woods missed the birdie attempt, but did pick up a shot on the 14th in extraordinary circumstances a few minutes later.

For the second day running Woods pulled off a superb recovery shot from the trees on the par four, only for a security guard to run in to try to control the crowd, slip on the wet ground and slide knee-first into Woods’s right ankle.

Woods limped away grimacing in pain but there appeared to be no lasting damage and after holing from 15 feet, the 43-year-old also converted from twice the distance on the par-five 15th.

Further good chances went begging on the 17th and 18th but a 68 left Woods just one shot off the lead shared by Francesco Molinari, Jason Day, Brooks Koepka, Adam Scott and Louis Oosthuizen, all current or former major champions.

Former world number one Dustin Johnson, South African debutant Jason Harding and Xander Schauffele were alongside Woods on six under, Schauffele carding the lowest score of the week with a superb 65.

Ryder Cup team-mates Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm were two shots off the pace on five under, while Rory McIlroy kept his hopes of the career grand slam alive with a 71 to finish level par.

Molinari had to wear a white boilersuit on his first visit to the Masters as caddie for his brother Edoardo, but put himself in position to leave this time with a coveted green jacket thanks to a flawless 67.

“I didn’t learn much about the course because we were going sideways most of the time,” Molinari joked in reference to Edoardo shooting rounds of 80 and 77 to comfortably miss the cut.

Molinari made his debut as a player in 2010 and recorded his best finish to date with a tie for 19th in 2012, but came into the event on the back of a stellar 12 months.

The 36-year-old has won four times since last year’s Masters, including the Open Championship at Carnoustie, while he also became the first European player to earn a perfect 5-0 record in the Ryder Cup in Paris.

Beginning the day four shots off the lead, Molinari birdied the third, eighth and ninth to reach the turn in 33 and picked up further shots on the 12th and 15th before a superb two-putt from 75 feet for par on the last.

“It was good, pretty solid, not many mistakes and when I missed greens I missed them on the good side, leaving myself pretty easy up and downs so all in all a very good day,” Molinari said.

“Now I’m just going to rest. The game is in good shape so I don’t think I can gain much from hitting balls. Just get as much energy as possible for the weekend. There’s going to be a lot of players in the mix and a very long way to go.”

Poulter enjoyed a massive slice of luck when his approach to the 13th stuck in the bank of Rae’s Creek and allowed him to chip and putt for an unlikely birdie, but added: “I’m a little frustrated with a couple of missed opportunities towards the end there.

“But it’s on the board and I am in position and it’s going to be a good weekend. There’s a long way to go and if you put yourself in position with nine to go the course opens up. As long as I am there or thereabouts and try to be super aggressive who knows what can happen.”

World number one Justin Rose missed the cut for the first time in 14 appearances after a 73, but Jordan Spieth recovered from an opening 75 to make the weekend thanks to a 68.

Football: Klopp excited by Premier League title fight

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the Premier League title race is something to get excited about rather than stressed about despite seeing his side overhauled by Manchester City in the past week.
City climbed to the top of the table on goal difference with victory against Everton in midweek but Liverpool's destiny remains in their own hands as they have a game in hand over Pep Guardiola's men, with both sides level on 62 points.
"It's getting exciting now," said Klopp on Friday (Feb 8).
"There was never a doubt that would happen. That was always clear. I don't think that anybody thought we would be top of the league with 12 points between us and another team with three games to go.
"The only chance to improve our position, even though it is a good position, is by winning football games."
Just over a week ago, Liverpool had the chance to move seven points clear at the top, but back-to-back draws with Leicester and West Ham on Monday have seen them reeled in by the champions.
Liverpool players and fans have been accused of letting nerves get to them in their desperation to end a 29-year wait to win the title.

And Klopp called on the home fans to make Anfield a cauldron when Bournemouth visit on Saturday.
"It's like shouting your soul on the pitch. That's how we say it in German," added Klopp.
"I know that with each fibre of our bodies we will be ready to fight for everything.
"The only thing I want to say after the season is we gave our everything."
There was good news for Liverpool off the field on Friday as the club announced a world-record £106 million (S$140 million) net profit last year thanks to the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and a run to the Champions League final.
Much of that profit has already been reinvested in the signings of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, and Klopp is hoping he does not need to ask for a lot more money this summer.
"We built a really strong squad and that's a squad built for the future, not only this season," added the German.
"I hope we don't need too much money in the next years to be honest because if you have the right players in, you work with them and make the best of it."
Klopp's squad has been ravaged by injury and illness in recent weeks but he could have Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum back for Bournemouth's visit after all three returned to training on Thursday.

Below are some of the highlights from the exclusive talkSPORT interview with Marcus Rashford…

On last summer’s World Cup and the UEFA Nations League

‘It’s good to remember the good times but in this group we remember the bad times as well.

“I remember in 2016 what it felt like to be knocked out [against Iceland at Euro 2016] in comparison to last summer and it’s a huge gap. We still have a lot to look forward to and we want to win trophies with the national team.

“These two games we have a massive opportunity to do just that and we’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”

“It’s great for the fans that we reached back-to-back semi-finals in major tournaments and we now understand where we are – but there is so much more to come.”

On Manchester United’s season

“It started rubbish and then midway through it got a little bit better and then it was hugely disappointing at the end.

“We have to look at it from a wider perspective. If you looked at the league table in December, there was no way you could put us in question for top four. Not a chance.

“Two months later we’re fighting to get into fourth place and maybe even third place and we fell short right at the very end.

“It’s hard to take becase we worked hard to get back in the mix and it’s difficult for us. However, for us now we can almost hit the reset button. Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] can do what he wants in the summer and we can all come back and work the way he wants us to work.

Rashford and Man United have had a turbulent season

“It was difficult him coming in mid-season I think we had a game within two days of him taking charge so he couldn’t get many of his points across.

“It’s now about pressing that reset button because we know where this club belongs and as players it’s our job to take us back to where we belong.”

“The Chelsea game was very tight and if we had won that game, it would have been seen as a successful season considering where we were in December. It’s fine margins.”

On that match against Paris Saint-Germain

“For the fans the PSG game was a huge moment, but for the players –  because we didn’t progress to the next round later –  it didn’t mean a thing.

“Those type of memories you want to recreate and make it happen as much as possible.

“It [the penalty] felt like a huge wait from the moment the referee blew his whistle. I was just waiting with the ball in my hand and then when he blows the whistle you relax, it’s just a penalty kick.

“Everything’s going on around you can hear people shouting VAR. Their players don’t know whats going on – some of them disheartened on the floor.

“If you look around you, you take in all these different things and you’re expected to go and score the penalty so I just stood their facing the fans until he blew the whistle.”

On playing as a striker

“That’s definitely been one positive of the season for me, especially from between the end of December to the middle of February.

“I had a good run. When you’re having a good run you need to analyse why you’re having a good run and what you can do to make that run continue.

“That’s the difference between good players and the best players as they can hit that form for a long period of time. I knew it was going to be difficult, I had injuries, the team had injuries.

“I remember the game against Liverpool I must’ve got injured in the first couple of minutes and I was trying to run it off. After 30 minutes I knew I couldn’t carry on but we had done three subs already. That game was a big turning point.”

On Raheem Sterling

“I’ve always looked up these kinds of players, regardless of what he has won this year or last year.

“It’s about how he is as a person and how he is to speak to and what type of advice he gives you. For me he’s been brilliant when I have gone to him, especially when I was younger.

“He’d always give me information and in games he’d always help you out. For me nothing’s changed. For the people that know him he’s just the same guy.

On the European finals

“I’m gonna go Chelsea [in the Europa League]. Just Hazard, he can do anything at any moment.

“I hope Tottenham win [the Champions League] but both teams have done remarkably well to get there so whichever team wins it deserves it.”

â€Å“I’m not going to be one to tell Mr (Arsene) Wenger about himself, but there’s a reason that they lost and it wasn’t because of one penalty,” Deeney said.

“I have to watch what I say, but it’s (having) a bit of cojones, is what I’ll say. Whenever I play against Arsenal, I’ll go up and think ‘let me whack the first one and see who wants it.”

Prior to the match on Monday night, Deeney stuck by those comments he made.
