For Liverpool, there is a chance to claim a sixth European crown and erase the nightmare of last season’s final defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev.
The situation is slightly more simple for Spurs – they have not reached the Champions League final in their illustrious history and are hoping to etch their name onto the famous trophy for the first time.
But whoever wins, both will be more worthy winners than Manchester United two decades ago.

United are the only side since the competition was re-branded in 1993 to win fewer than half their games en route to lifting the trophy.
The Red Devils managed to record just five victories – including the final – out of their 11 main round European fixtures, giving them a win-rate of just 45%.
Goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham secured a memorable comeback win against Bayern Munich in Camp Nou having already wrapped up the Premier League and FA Cup.

Barcelona (2014/15) and Borussia Dortmund (1996/97) are the only other teams to boast a win-rate of over 80%, with Real featuring twice among the top five most dominant sides, as you can see below.

Another side with statistically poor form was the 1995/96 Juventus winners.
The Serie A side lost the greatest proportion of their matches during their European triumph (27%), while AC Milan (2002/03) and Real Madrid (1999/00) are the only champions to lose more than three times in a season – but this was during the extended format of the competition, which included two group stages and 17 games in total.
