Queens Park Rangers to gift Loftus Road naming rights to local charity from next season

Queens Park Rangers are gifting the naming rights of Loftus Road to a local charity from next season – with the club’s fanbase having the final say on which charity.

The club, which first played at Loftus Road more than 100 years ago, want to use the stadium to assist a local organisation which has a close connection with the area and the fanbase.

QPR CEO Lee Hoos said on the news: “I have spoken with the Supporters Consultation Committee as well as numerous individual fans and floated this idea to them.

“We spoke about how we can use Loftus Road to really help a charity get exposure they would never normally be able to achieve.

“The message that came back from the fans I spoke to was that it had to be a charity that meant something to the supporters, and it had to be a local organisation which positively impacts on the community.

“There are so many worthwhile causes out there who do incredible things, so the next question was how we decide which charity to work with.

“Consultation with fans is something that I have always believed in, and so it makes absolute sense to let the supporters make that decision.”

Shaun Wright-Phillips explains how father Ian Wright helped him cope with racial abuse

Shaun Wright-Phillips has revealed his father, Ian Wright, helped him deal with racial abuse during his playing career.

Football has been littered with various incidents of racism this season – and Tottenham defender Danny Rose has admitted he can’t wait to retire because of it.

Former Manchester City and Chelsea winger Wright-Phillips stresses how difficult it can be to perform through racism.

Recently, City’s Raheem Sterling and Juventus striker Moise Kean defied abuse by scoring and celebrating in front of their abusers – and Sterling has become a leading voice in the fight against racism.

Another prominent figure is Arsenal legend and Match of the Day pundit Wright, and Wright-Phillips explained how his father helped him cope with abuse.

“It was a big benefit to have my dad to knock certain things on the head that may have touched a very bad nerve and I could’ve reacted differently,” he told talkSPORT.

“He guided me and my brother [Bradley Wright-Phillips] in the right direction and we’ve learned to cope with it.

“It’s just not good to have in the game, period. It’s just wrong.”

The 37-year-old is pleased that players like Sterling and Rose are beginning to speak out about racism and suggests wholesale bans could help to eradicate the problem.

He added: “It’s amazing that they’re actually talking out about it because it’s hard.

“As players on the pitch, it’s even harder to deal with a play a good game, like Sterling for example.

Sterling silenced the critics with the perfect repsonse

“He had to deal with that but came out on top. He’s managed to juggle it but some people might not be able to manage it.

“I just think it’s bad, there are kids in the stadium, they’re teaching their kids that racism is alright.

“If I was the FA or UEFA, I would just ban the fans completely until it’s policed properly.”

Malcom shines in absence of other Barca stars

Malcom shines in absence of other Barca stars
BARCELONA • Malcom has struggled for game time at Barcelona since his €42 million (S$64.6 million) move from Bordeaux last July as he finds himself behind Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembele, and Philippe Coutinho in the pecking order.
But, with Messi only fit enough to come on as a substitute, Dembele missing through injury, and Coutinho struggling badly for form, Barca coach Ernesto Valverde decided to give the Brazilian winger a rare start in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg against Real Madrid at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.
And the 21-year-old turned out to be Barca's liveliest player, curling home the equaliser in the 57th minute after Lucas Vazquez had fired Real ahead in the sixth minute.
Malcom has made just one start in the LaLiga this season, although he has featured in all five Copa del Rey matches. Despite finding regular football hard to come by at Barca, he insisted that patience is the key.
"I've always been calm, just like when I arrived. I have friends who give me confidence, I have family, agents all fighting for me and also my teammates. I have a lot of support," he said. "I have not played much recently, but I'm more confident. I will work hard to improve and play a little more."
When the two teams last met in October, Real were thrashed 5-1 by Barca at the Nou Camp, bringing an end to Julen Lopetegui's spell.
Wednesday's performance was a distinct improvement and showed just how far Santiago Solari's side have come in a little over three months. The Argentinian was pleased with his team's performance and thought they might have snatched a victory.
"It's hard to talk about justice in football. We had chances to score in the first and second half, but what will stick with me is that it was a precise game, very entertaining," he said.
"Both sides have the chance to go through," added Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who made good saves from Suarez and Malcom.
"It was a good game. Everyone in the team worked hard when we needed to and we played well too."
The second leg will take place at the Santiago Bernabeu on Feb 27.

A video has been shared on social media of a man, believed to be Dorrans, being treated by medical staff while holding his head.

The man was later taken to hospital, it is understood.

Dorrans, who joined Rangers in 2017, is on holiday on the Spanish island with Gers’ team-mate Ryan Jack and their respective partners.

He was pictured earlier in the day at the Ocean Beach Club in San Antonio.

An eyewitness wrote of the incident, per The Sun: “I didn’t see what happened before it but it spilled out the door.

Every football supporter loves to see a young player shine for their first-team.

John-Jules, who plays as a forward, came on for Alexandre Lacazette on 67 minutes.

He wasted no time too, grabbing his first goal for the senior side within five minutes – dispossessing an Al-Nasr defender, before going round the goalkeeper and cooly slotted the ball home to put Arsenal 3-1 up.

Al-Nasr pulled one back right at the end but the John-Jules’ striker ensured the Gunners won 3-2 after Carl Jenkinson and Lacazette’s goals responded to Ronny Fernandez’s opener.

Tottenham new stadium latest: Spurs fans worried ticket prices at White Hart Lane will be too expensive after ‘sharp increase’

The Tottenham Supporters’ Trust is concerned fans could be priced out of attending matches at their new £850 million stadium.

Spurs announced a freeze on the cost of all season tickets at the 62,062-seater arena, which is due to open against Crystal Palace on April 3.

However, most match tickets are at least £10 more expensive than they were to watch Spurs play at Wembley.

At the home of the national stadium the highest-priced seats for Category A games pitched at £98, but that will not be the case when Spurs move into their new home.

MORE: Tottenham to suspend fans caught trying to re-sell tickets for stadium opener

Category B and C are also 30 to 50 per cent more expensive than they were at the old White Hart Lane.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side men are set to play their final five league games of the season at their new home, as well as their mouthwatering Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash against Man City.

For Category A matches tickets at the new stadium start from £52, while B spans from £43 to £95 and C £30 to £80.

A Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust expressed their frustration in a statement, saying: “Our main concern is increases in Category B and C pricing will make access to those games very difficult once the novelty of the new stadium has worn off.

“The club argue prices are not comparable, but fans’ pay packets are comparable, and this is a sharp increase in a little over two seasons.”

Football: Everton bounce back with 5-1 rout of Burnley

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Everton ended their five-game winless run in emphatic fashion by drubbing relegation-threatened Burnley 5-1 at Turf Moor on Wednesday (Dec 26) as they bounced back from their humiliation against Tottenham Hotspur in real style.
Everton, thrashed 6-2 at home by Spurs on Sunday, were 3-0 up inside 22 minutes against a poor Burnley side who face a long battle against relegation.
French left-back Lucas Digne scored twice for the Merseysiders who showed no signs of any lasting damage from their heavy loss.
"After Sunday we needed to prove that we can win and play very well. It was an important win for club and the fans," said former Barcelona wing-back Digne.
"We needed to start very well and after 30 minutes we were 3-0 up and it was fantastic. We feel good".
It took less than two minutes to grab the lead when the unmarked Yerry Mina headed in a cross from the left by Brazilian winger Bernard.
A curling Digne free kick beat Burnley keeper Joe Hart to double the lead in the 13th minute and nine minutes later Everton were 3-0 up.
Burnley defender Ben Mee handled the ball, rising for a header in a crowded penalty area, and referee Michael Oliver awarded a spot-kick which Gylfi Sigurdsson confidently converted.
Sean Dyche's side pulled a goal back eight minutes before the break when a James Tarkowski header was pushed off the line by Jordan Pickford and Ben Gibson hooked the ball home.
Burnley had a great chance to narrow the gap further after the break but Tarkowski missed the target from close-range.
Burnley's labour towards an attempted comeback came to nothing after Digne made it 4-1 with a low drive from outside the box in the 71st minute.
Brazilian Richarlison, rested with a start on the bench, completed the rout in stoppage time, collecting a fine through pass from Sigurdsson before slipping the ball home.
Everton manager Marco Silva praised his players and the club's supporters for the way they reacted to the defeat to Spurs.
"The fans welcomed our players before the match, which is fantastic after a tough result on Sunday and the players as well, they deserve this," said the Portuguese manager.
"I think the best solution to the last result was to play as quickly as you can, luckily for us we played after three days.
"They showed they are here to fight, to compete and to show the ambition we have as a club" he said.
Burnley boss Dyche said his team had been clearly second best.
"They started much brighter, much sharper with more energy. They were the better side and deserved to win," he said.
The result leaves Burnley inside the relegation zone in 18th place - above only Huddersfield and Fulham.
"The margins are super fine; the challenge this season is we haven't kept the margins tight. There's a number of reasons why, but there's no excuse. We are where we are and we don't overly deserve to be better than where we are," said Dyche.
