Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona: Reds legend Phil Thompson says Champions League semi-final was ‘most astonishing match I’ve ever seen at Anfield’

Liverpool legends Phil Thompson and Gary McAllister believe the Reds’ amazing Champions League comeback against Barcelona was the greatest ever night under the lights at Anfield.

Three-time European Cup winner Thompson said it was ‘the most astonishing match’ he has ever seen, as Liverpool overcame incredible odds to beat Barca and seal their place in another final.

Few gave Jurgen Klopp’s men much hope, as they were tasked with fighting back from 3-0 down after their first-leg defeat in Spain.

But they stunned all their doubters with a thrilling performance against the Spanish champions, with Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi each scoring twice to seal a 4-0 victory – Liverpool progressing to the final 4-3 on aggregate.

‘The Miracle of Merseyside’ has been hailed as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever European wins, but Thompson believes it could be the greatest ever victory at Anfield.

“It was the most astonishing match I’ve seen at Anfield,” the former defender told talkSPORT host Jim White.

“Yes, we’ve had some wonderful ones, Olympiakos and Saint-Etienne and people will always remember them, but they were nothing compared to this one because of who they were actually playing against.

“This Barcelona side are just absolutely incredible, so to beat them after being 3-0 down…

“If we go on and win this, it will have been the greatest night Anfield had ever witnessed.”

Former midfielder McAllister was similarly stunned, saying Barcelona were left ‘in shock’ by the pressure they were put under by Klopp’s side and the atmosphere created by the buzzing supporters.

And the Scot believes Liverpool now deserve to lift the trophy after their semi-final heroics.

“Before the game, as much as my heart was saying Liverpool can do it, I just thought Barcelona would score,” he told talkSPORT.

“To watch the game unfold, it was just incredible, I couldn’t believe what I was watching.

“I just thought Barcelona were in shock. I don’t think they can cope with the pressure, the players and the fans. It was incredible, incredible watching it.

“Having been in the final last season and what they’ve done this season, with the way they’ve performed in the league as well, I think Liverpool deserve to the trophy.”

Chelsea are a better team when Callum Hudson-Odoi plays, insists Blues legend Eidur Gudjohnsen

Chelsea cult hero Eidur Gudjohnsen wants to see more of Callum Hudson-Odoi, insisting the Blues are better when he plays.

The former striker, who made 263 appearances for the west London club, believes the 18-year-old winger is ready to feature more regularly after finally earning his first Premier League start against Brighton.

Chelsea fans have been crying out for Maurizio Sarri to use the academy graduate, who continues to be linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

“As a young player coming through, you have to take your chances and use the opportunities well. Every time he’s been given a chance, he’s shown that he’s got the qualities,” Gudjohnsen told talkSPORT.

Hudson-Odoi shone against Brighton

“You do feel that with Hudson-Odoi on the pitch, Chelsea look like a better team.

“He’s got time but he’s shown that he’s ready and we would love to see a talent like that on the pitch even more.”

An assist on his full league debut in the 3-0 victory over Brighton did much to boost his case, as the Blues produced one of their more impressive performances of the season.

However, a lack of consistency leaves Sarri’s side locked in a tense battle for the top four spots, and Gudjohnsen admits it’s been a frustrating season.

“At their best they can compete with the best teams, they can beat anyone. But they haven’t found the consistency this season.

“It’ll be a very important run-in from now until the end of the season, because they would love to be in the Champions League next year.

“If you look at the Europa League, that’s not only a great opportunity to win the oldest trophy in European football, and that Champions League spot is up for grabs.”

The Icelander, 40, also suggests constant speculation around the futures of Sarri and star man Eden Hazard has a negative impact on the team’s performances.

He added: “You can see on the pitch that there’s a lack of stability at the club.”

Football: Ex-FAS general secretary Winston Lee appointed as new gen-sec of Asean Football Federation

SINGAPORE - Former Football Association of Singapore (FAS) general secretary Winston Lee has been appointed by the Asean Football Federation (AFF) as its new General Secretary.
It is understood that the 54-year-old's contract is for an initial two years.
In a statement released on Friday (May 31), AFF president Khiev Sameth said: "Having distinguished himself over the past 20 years in his various senior management roles, Winston is recognised by the international football community as one of the most capable and far-sighted football leaders of his generation.
"Given his extensive football industry experience, strategic vision and proven record of performance, Winston is the ideal person to bring the AFF to a new level in the coming years.
"Winston is well versed with the evolution facing the football industry and, under his leadership, the AFF will be well-positioned to capitalise on the huge market in Asean and do more for football in this region."
As AFF general secretary, Lee's job scope is to oversee and support the football development of its 12 member associations, and grow the AFF in terms of business and operations.
Lee thanked his predecessor Azzuddin Ahmad for the "strong foundation" he had built over the years, and said: "I am honoured to have been appointed by AFF, and I look forward to driving the development of our corporate strategy to position AFF for stronger growth and continued success.
"The football industry is going through a period of transformation and we need to continue to embrace changes for us to remain relevant. My focus and priority for now is to chart our strategic direction, streamline our operations and accelerate our transformation."
Prior to this appointment, Lee had been a Fifa committee member and consultant, Asian Football Confederation vice-president and executive committee member, in addition to his role at FAS.
However, he was embroiled in a Commercial Affairs Department probe that shook the local fraternity ahead of the FAS elections in 2017.
The investigation into a possible misuse of funds was sparked by the revelation of a $500,000 donation made by Tiong Bahru Football Club, through the FAS to the AFF for a Football Management System.
Along with former FAS president Zainudin Nordin, Lee was one of four people arrested, but no charges have been brought in relation to the matter and they were released.
Last month, Lee withdrew his candidacy for one of nine AFC executive committee member seats just before its congress on April 6.

Vinnie Jones explains how his Hollywood career was sparked by Iain Dowie and rejection at QPR

They say everything happens for a reason – and Vinnie Jones can certainly testify to that.

The footballer-turned-Hollywood-hardman reveals his big break in the film industry was sparked by rejection at Queens Park Rangers.

Back in 1998, following the sacking of Ray Harford, former QPR chairman Chris Wright approached Jones with an offer for the job.

But the role eventually went to Iain Dowie, who took charge as caretaker boss before the appointment of Gerry Francis.

So ‘The Axe’ packed his bags and set sail for Los Angeles, where he landed a starring role in the film ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’.

Dowie was gone in 18 days.

Jones told talkSPORT: “Iain Dowie was lurking in the background, doing a bit of mischief, and he ended up getting the job.

“That’s when I ended up coming out here [to Los Angeles].

“I got that job, ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’, with Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie. Iain Dowie was coaching the reserves.

“So that was a bit of a turnaround.”

Dowie was briefly in charge of QPR before they appointed Francis

But while most people would take the bright lights of Hollywood over a relegation dogfight, Jones wishes he had a crack at management.

When asked whether he regrets never coaching, he said: “Massively. I actually came out here and set up a semi-pro team called the Hollywood All-Stars and I really loved it.

“I loved coaching the lads. I loved the organising. I loved it from a tactical perspective on the bench.

“We passed it around a bit as well, we didn’t just lump it!”

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is being targeted by clubs from across Europe as doubts remain over his future at Leeds United.

Bielsa’s Leeds fell just short of promotion, with Derby defeating them in the Championship play-off semi-finals

He has a year remaining on his Whites contract, and it is understood Leeds are becoming more convinced Bielsa will decide to remain with the club for 2019/20.

Nonetheless, with questions over the 63-year-old’s future, there is rival interest in the Leeds boss.

Roma, the Serie A giants, are said to be considering Bielsa as their new manager, with Claudio Ranieri leaving at the end of the season.

Elsewhere, Spanish outfit Celta Vigo have already made an ‘offer’ to the Argentine, TMW report.

Celta have spent the whole season fighting off relegation from LaLiga and hope Bielsa is the man to guide them up the table next term.

Bielsa has previously managed in Spain, taking charge of Espanyol and Athletic Club, while he’s never actually coached in Italy despite being named Lazio boss in 2016.

Macclesfield boss Sol Campbell has urged the club to spend their budget wisely following their narrow escape from being relegated out of the Football League.

This is a tremendous achievement for the Silkmen, who were seven points adrift of safety when Campbell was appointed manager in November.

It’s also a tremendous feat for the former Arsenal and England defender on his first managerial post.

He was linked to Grimsby and Oxford United in previous years but failed to land the jobs, however, this is now a vindication over any Campbell doubters.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Dom McGuinness after Macclesfield’s survival was confirmed, Campbell said: “I’m very pleased with myself because I don’t think anyone wanted to take the job!

The former Arsenal man struggled to get a managerial post before joining Macclesfield

“I just felt I didn’t want to be hanging around on the sidelines for the next six months so I took it and put everything into it – my heart, my soul, my spirit, everything and I committed to it.

“That’s what you’ve got to do in football – commit. Completely commit to the cause and see where you end up.

“I don’t think it’s glamorous! It’s a nice area to live in but I don’t think it’s glamorous!

“I might have got some more grey hairs but I love everything about football. It keeps me alive and on my toes. I don’t want to be on my toes all the time but it keeps me alive!”

There is a lot of work for Macclesfield to do following their narrow escape and Campbell insisted the club needs to spend their transfer budget wisely this summer.

Asked about what assurances there are at the club, Campbell said: “None! I just have to make do! You’ve got to make do.

“The thing is every year is a new budget and as long as the budget is spent in the correct way, then I think we’ll be ok. That’s the thing really.

“I don’t know what happened last year with the budget but there’s a certain amount of money that comes into it and it just has to be apportioned in the correct way and utilised in the right way and spent accordingly really.

“Every season there’s a new budget so I hope that I can look into that and go from there. It comes down to budget really.

“If you’ve got a healthy budget and divvied out in the right areas ten that’s key.”

“Why has it changed? It does not depend only on me, it’s about Daniel (Levy). Of course I know he is happy with me and that is what he is telling me.

“But I understand Tottenham is bigger than one person. Tottenham is bigger than one player, Tottenham is bigger than everything.

“Always, you need to feel my position here is I need to fight every day to keep my position. That doesn’t mean I am not comfortable.

“Always I tell Jesus (Perez, assistant manager), we need to think that maybe tomorrow if we don’t care about our position maybe we can go away quick. Football changes the same very quickly.

“It’s difficult to say I am now happy and sure I will be here next season. If I said that and something wrong happened and I’m not here then you say, ‘Oh Pochettino said he will be here and now he’s not here’.

“I don’t say because maybe the rumour can be true or Daniel can say ‘it’s enough, I need another manager’.

“In my mind, always I am living today can be the last day, tomorrow can be the last day. That is my philosophy.

“Look at what happened at Real Madrid. Zidane said, ‘I go’, then two managers and not even the end of the season and he’s back. Who believed that?

“That is why in football, you must respect football because everything that today is white, tomorrow is black and then white again. I try to live with this respect and knowing things can turn so quickly.”

Pochettino says football can change very quickly

Pochettino is plotting to become the first team to win at Anfield in the Premier League this season as they bid to revive their season.

Spurs travel to Liverpool to play their first game for 22 days aiming to stop a rot that saw them take just one point from their four matches before their hiatus.

That saw them not only slip out of the title race, which the Reds are currently leading, but also put their top-four spot under serious jeopardy as themselves, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are separated by just four points.

They could not be handed a tougher task on their resumption, which came due to the FA Cup quarter-finals and the international break, as Jurgen Klopp’s side have dropped just four points in front of their own fans this season in draws with Manchester City and Leicester.

Spurs have not won there in the league in 11 years, although they did take a point in a dramatic draw last season.

“The motivation is to change our dynamic of the results, we need to start to feel again the victory,” Pochettino said.

“It is a challenge to go there. They are unbeaten in Premier League at Anfield, it is going to be a massive challenge.

“We respect them, they are doing good job, very good team, it will be tough.

“Last season, the game was very tough, (our) performance was good, and it was a good point, to start to build in our mind the determination to go there and be competitive and win the game.

“But of course it is going to be difficult.”
