FA investigating after Fylde players attacked on pitch by Stockport fans during FA Trophy clash

The Football Association are investigating footage which shows two Stockport fans confronting AFC Fylde players during Saturday’s FA Trophy clash at Edgeley Park.

Alex Reid struck an 89th minute winner to send the National League side to Wembley, where they will face Leyton Orient, but his Fylde team-mates were accosted during their celebrations.

The Fylde players celebrated Reid’s winner in front of the Stockport fans, with one furious supporter entering the field of play to confront Arlen Birch, before Zaina Francis-Angol and Fylde captain Neill Byrne attempted to deal with the situation by shoving him away.

Stockport̢۪s Frank Mulhern then grabbed the pitch invader as he tried to make his way back to the stands, before stewards intervened.

The incident can be seen in the video below, starting at 10 minutes 10 seconds.

Furthermore, Fylde chairman David Haythornthwaite was allegedly threatened in the directors box as he celebrated his side’s winning goal, The Sun report.

Fylde manager Dave Challinor said: â€Å“It just shows how big an effect football all over this country has.

â€Å“You have one idiot who runs on at Birmingham and all of a sudden now everyone thinks it’s clever to do it.

â€Å“It’s wrong, it really is. What you can’t do is say that’s synonymous of all their fans, it’s not it’s just some idiot running on the pitch.

â€Å“It’s dangerous, really dangerous, but people just need to self-police. If someone wants to go on the pitch no matter how many police or stewards you have you aren’t going to stop them.

â€Å“But we don’t want to go back to where it was 15 or 20 years ago in this country where people are behind fences.”

The FA are now investigating the footage and may punish Stockport for the supporters’ behaviour.

This incident comes only a couple of weeks after Jack Grealish was assaulted on the pitch by a Birmingham City supporter.

An Arsenal fan also invaded the Emirate Stadium pitch and shoved Manchester United’s Chris Smalling later that same day.

Paul Mitchell was named as the man who attacked Grealish, and he was jailed for 14 weeks after pleading guilty to assault and illegally entering the field of play.

He was also banned from football for 10 years, while Birmingham City handed him a lifetime ban.
