Rio Ferdinand may have got a little over-excited when he declared ‘Man United are back’ two months ago.
The former Manchester United defender made the claim after the club knocked Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League in March.
It was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 14th win in 17 games in caretaker charge and he was appointed on a permanent basis at the end of the month.
Ferdinand, who has been heavily linked with a director of football role at Old Trafford, could not contain his excitement in the BT Sport studio after the game, declaring “Ole’s at the wheel man, he’s doing his thing, Man United are back!”
But it has been downhill ever since the memorable victory in Paris with United winning just twice in 11 games.
A 1-1 draw with bottom club Huddersfield, whose relegation to the Championship was confirmed five weeks ago, saw them miss out on a top-four finish for the third time in four seasons.
And Solskjaer believes United deserve to be playing Europa League football next term.
He said: “We gave ourselves a chance to be in the Champions League, something we didn’t think was possible.

“You could say we lost the opportunity (on Sunday), but that’s not the case – it’s been all through the season. It’s not been good enough.
“We had so many opportunities to grab third or fourth. We weren’t able to. So it’s probably the right place for us, the Europa League, next year.”
It has been a dire end to the season for Solskjaer’s men – and rival fans have been mocking Ferdinand over his ‘Man United are back’ claim and a tweet in February saying ‘We got our UNITED BACK’.
