Sam Allardyce believes England boast the best group of young players they have had for generations.
The former Three Lions manager says the future is bright for the national game, but has challenged clubs to give their starlets more game time at the top level.
Gareth Southgate is keen to build on the success of the World Cup in Russia, but he is not afraid to blood young talent into his senior team – and his latest squad is testament to that.
Of the original 25 players called up for the Three Lions̢۪ opening Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro, 18 of them are aged 26 and below.
And Chelsea̢۪s 18-year-old winger Callum Hudson-Odoi and 24-year-old Southampton midfielder James Ward Prowse have since been drafted into the team, after a number of players pulled out through injury.
The debut call-up of Hudson-Odoi has drawn particular interest. The young Chelsea forward was selected for the Under-21s squad for the first-time only last week, but he has been immediately promoted the senior squad despite having yet to start a Premier League game.
The likes of Hudson-Odoi, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Declan Rice – amongst others not yet in the frame for an England spot – are proof academies have unearthed real talent over the last few years.
Hudson-Odoi and Rice may well earn their first caps on Friday night, as England get their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign up and running against the Czechs.
And Big Sam is excited to see what the future holds for the young lions.

Asked if this is the best group of young players England have had for some time, Allardyce told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: â€Å“Oh, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.
â€Å“They’re popping up all over the place. Somewhere along the line the academies have started working again, after all the stick they’ve had over the last few years.
â€Å“They are looking very, very strong indeed, so let’s hope they come into the England side and make it better than it already is, because it promises to be a very bright future.
â€Å“Even though some of them are not playing on a regular basis, Gareth still thinks they’re talented enough to come into the England squad and play, and full marks to him.
â€Å“It’s going to help them develop and it’s going to help them fight to get into their Premier League teams when they go back.â€
