Tony Cascarino picks his Premier League Team of the Year – with NO Manchester United or Arsenal players

Tony Cascarino has named his Premier League Team of the Year, and it features NO Manchester United or Arsenal players.

The talkSPORT host and pundit was challenged to make his XI on the Weekend Sports Breakfast, as we looked ahead to Sunday’s title finale.

But, after the much-criticised PFA TOTY featured just one player who does not play for title rivals Manchester City or Liverpool – Man United’s Paul Pogba, and even that wasn’t a popular choice – Casc was told he could only pick one player per team.

And the former Chelsea striker’s selection polarised opinion on social media.

See what you make of it, including Casc’s thoughts on why he didn’t pick a United or Gunners player, below.

Because nobody is wrong, it’s just opinion… right?

Salomon Rondon over Alexandre Lacazette?

“Lacazette has been better than Aubameyang over the season, he’s become a far better player for Arsenal and he was the only other one I was thinking about.

“But Rondon’s impact at Newcastle has been one of the main reasons why they stayed up. He turned up from West Brom inured in the summer and he didn’t quite get going in his first ten games, but from that moment, to a man, I can’t think or a more important player at any club. The way he led the line for them, I just had to go for him.”

No Sterling?

“With Liverpool you could have picked Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Robertson, but Mane was the one I kept going back to and thought, how many games has he changed over the season? That’s why I put him in.

“Hazard is obvious, I don’t think there’s any other Chelsea player.

“With Bernando Silva, again it’s so tricky because there are four of five players for Man City I could name – Laporte, Sterling, Ederson – but I just thought Silva, for me, has been a tenacious goalscorer and creator and he stepped up to a much better level.”

Sissoko over Eriksen from Spurs?

“With Sissoko, eyebrows were raised when Tottenhamn paid £30m for him, but he’s just got better and better for Spurs this season. He and Wijnaldum were in the Newcastle team that got relegated – it was great business to sign them from Tottenham and Liverpool.

“Moutinho, I can’t believe Wolves managed to bring him into the club for £5m. He’s a Champions League-quality player! He creates, he runs that midfield with his passing and I think it was one of the best transfers that has been made in this country, bringing in a player of that international stature.

“Those two in midfield have been real standouts in that position.”

No place for Player of the Year Van Dijk?

“I totally respect that Van Dijk can be the centre-half, but we’re talking about the highest level in three or four positions.

“Mane was the one I kept going back to from Liverpool. At the start of the season, Salah was the one who took all the headlines but this year Mane has done that more often than any other forward, in a sensational season for Liverpool offensively.”

No Red Devils make the cut?

“I’m sorry, I can’t have any Manchester United players. Defensively they’ve been awful and recently going forward they have as well, so it was very, very hard to pick one of them.”
