Liverpool news: Danny Murphy explains why luck will carry Reds to Premier League title at Manchester City’s expense

Danny Murphy is convinced Liverpool will win the Premier League title because of all the luck they’ve had this season.

The Reds are two points clear of Manchester City at the league’s summit, having played a game more – and fortune has undoubtedly favoured Jurgen Klopp’s men.

They were gifted last-gasp winners at home to Everton and Tottenham, while Manchester City forward Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty in the six-pointer between the two sides back in October.

And while Murphy insists his former side deserve to be league leaders, he suggests the football gods might also be helping them towards a first top-flight success in 29 years.

Klopp has benefited from good fortune this season

“Little decisions have gone their way more than in previous seasons and more than other teams this season,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“Partly you make your own luck, because Liverpool have played brilliantly, they’ve lost one game in the league all season.

“They’re playing well but they’re also getting the rub of the green and it just makes me think it’s going to be their year.”

Meanwhile, Murphy has been left confused by Klopp’s recent omission of Jordan Henderson from the starting XI.

The Liverpool midfielder has started on the bench in four of the club’s last six Premier League games.

Klopp has a plethora of midfield talent to choose from, but Murphy insists none are better than Henderson.

“I’ve been watching Henderson a lot recently and he’s been playing really well, he told talkSPORT.

“I’m surprised he didn’t start. I like the other lads, there’s an argument to say [Georginio] Wijnaldum, Fabinho, [James] Milner are all capable and they are.

One slice of luck every title-winning side has enjoyed

“But I just think, at the moment, out of all the midfielders Liverpool have, he’s the one which possesses more of those leadership qualities, that fire, tenacity and athleticism.

“If he’s fit, he’d be playing.”
