Who is Jim Ratcliffe? The boyhood Manchester United fan linked with buying Chelsea from Roman Abramovich

Petrochemicals billionaire Jim Ratcliffe is interested in buying Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.

The 66-year-old completed a takeover of cycling giant Team Sky on Tuesday – and the Blues could be his next big purchase.

Ratcliffe remains keen on buying the club despite Abramovich’s £2.5billion asking price.

Abramovich̢۪s Stamford Bridge future has been thrown into doubt since failing to renew his UK visa last year, which forced him to obtain an Israeli passport to ensure he can still legally visit England.

Further questions have been raised over the Russian tycoon̢۪s long-term commitment to the club after putting Stamford Bridge redevelopment plans on hold last summer.

So, who is Jim Ratcliffe? The man interested in ending Abramovich’s 16-year reign in west London…

  • Ratcliffe grew up in Failsworth, Greater Manchester and lived in a council house with his parents.

  • Ratcliffe founded petrochemicals company Ineos in 1998 which would go on to make him a multi-billionaire. Now, he is understood to be worth £21billion.

  • Explaining the secret to his major success, he told The Times: â€Å“We’d look at businesses that were unfashionable or unsexy, facilities owned by large corporations where you’d know they would be sloppy with the fixed costs. We’d run them a bit better, reduce the costs, make them busy, and over the cycle they are very profitable.”

  • Ratcliffe, a boyhood Manchester United fan, lives in Chelsea and has a Stamford Bridge season ticket.

  • The businessman changed Team Sky’s name to Team Ineos following his successful takeover.

  • Ratcliffe is no stranger to owning football clubs. In November 2017, he bought Swiss minnows FC Lausanne-Sport. Zinedine Zidane’s son, Enzo Fernandez, was the first signing under Ratcliffe’s ownership. The club suffered relegation to Switzerland’s second tier last season.

  • He was knighted by the Queen for his services to business and investment in June 2018.

  • Ratcliffe is a strong Brexit supporter. Last year, he announced he was relocating to Monaco, a move which would reportedly save him up to £4billion in tax. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable branded the move â€Å“deeply cynical”. He said: â€Å“The idea we should be dishing out knighthoods to people who have no commitment to this country is rather shameful.”
