It’s safe to say Declan Rice’s rise in football has been a speedy one.
This season the holding midfielder has risen to be one of the most valuable members of the West Ham team.
On Friday night, the 20-year-old put in an accomplished performance in his full debut for the Three Lions as they emphatically beat Montenegro.
It seemed more like his 51st start rather than his first – and Rice showed everyone just how far he has come in the game by posting a throwback snap of him and Harry Kane from 2014.
Along with the picture, he tweeted: “From asking @HKane for a picture in 2014, to my @England teammate in 2019. What a journey!”
Rice’s could now make England’s defensive midfield role his own for years to come.
And after the match he couldn’t hide his elation after completing the full 90 minutes.
He said:Ă‚ “To get the win, 5-1; to get the start – IĂ¢€™ve loved every minute of it. I have been training well and obviously with Eric DierĂ¢€™s injury as well that gave me that chance.
“I loved every minute of it. From the start, singing the national anthem. You just canĂ¢€™t describe it.
“I knew on Sunday [that I was going to start]. The game face was on and I knew I had to be focused on what lie ahead.”
Mauricio Sarri will want a repeat performance of Sunday's 3-0 win over Watford when Chelsea host Eintracht Frankfurt with a place in the Europa League final up for grabs The first-leg ended 1-1
