Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent slams club who allegedly asked if Danny Rose was ‘crazy’ after mental health admission

Darren Bent has slammed the unnamed club who allegedly asked if Danny Rose was ‘crazy’ ahead of a proposed transfer last summer.

Tottenham star Rose bravely opened up about his battle with depression in the build up to the 2018 World Cup amid injury problems and the death of a close family member.

He was linked with a move away from Spurs before the start of the 2018/19 season – and told talkSPORT the unnamed club’s query left him ‘embarrassed’ and ‘angry’.

“That’s the message I was told by someone at my club,” Rose said exclusively to talkSPORT. “I was speaking to someone last summer and Spurs were aware of it, they was helping me out massively in trying to maybe get a deal sorted.

“There was no bid ever put in, so I don’t know how close it is without a bid being made.

“Tottenham were absolutely brilliant, that process they were trying to help me anyway possible.

“I was leaving training one afternoon and a senior official from the club stopped me in the car park and he said ‘we are aware you are speaking to someone and I have spoke to somebody and they would like to meet you’, and I said ‘yeah that is fine’ and he said ‘they just want to check that you are not crazy’.

“I have never been so embarrassed in all my life, I just wanted to get in my car and hide.”

Bent, who played for Spurs between 2007 and 2009, was shocked by Rose’s claim.

He told talkSPORT: “Danny Rose has been open enough to come out and speak about it [depression]… don’t punish him for it. It’s not a laughing matter.

“So regardless of whether it was taken out of context and people went ‘are you crazy?’ It’s so ignorant and rude. It’s crazy.

“Fair play to Danny for not exposing the football club because I know a lot of people that would have because it’s just poor.

“There’s nothing funny about that, he’s been big enough and bold enough to come out and speak about mental health issues because one thing that’s always labelled at footballers is ‘how can they have mental health issues? They earn all this money, what have they got to be sad about?’.

“He’s been open enough to come out and speak about the problems he’s had, he’s had family tragedies, people probably didn’t know that and all these different topics, and yet someone needs to meet him to see if he’s crazy.

“It’s not about that, it’s about what he does on the football pitch.”
