Newcastle vs Liverpool: When the Magpies had an open top bus parade for losing 1974 FA Cup final

There were scenes of jubilation as Newcastle̢۪s 1974 FA Cup finalists were welcomed home by their adoring fans.

‘Well done the lads’ was splashed across the front of an open topped black and white striped bus, which carried the players past thousands of screaming supporters.

Only one thing was missing – the FA Cup trophy. It wasn’t front and centre for all to see. No, it was more than 170 miles away in Liverpool with the actual winners.

Regardless, two days after the final, which Liverpool won 3-0, Newcastle returned home to a heroes̢۪ welcome.

If Twitter was a thing in 1974, users would have had a field day, especially those in Sunderland whose fans would have taken particular joy in their rivals celebrating defeat considering they were FA Cup winners a year earlier.

Newcastle may have lost to a team that went on to dominate at home and abroad, but the Geordie faithful still wanted to let them know they were proud of them.

The same happened in 1998 and 1999 when they were defeated in successive finals.

“It was an embarrassment having to parade around the city as a loser,” Alan Shearer later said.

“I asked not to do it but realised it was to say thank you to the public.”

When Newcastle lost in 1974, though, the FA Cup still had all of its magic. There was no widespread resting of players to focus on the league.

And in Newcastle where the city is steeped in cup tradition, the trophy was a major prize given they had won it six times previously.

“It frightens me to think of the reception we’d get if we actually won the Cup,” Shearer added.

That would have been some party if they̢۪d beaten Liverpool.
